After inspiring Darren Cadger at presentation at Robert Gordon University (RGU), Darren joined our team to further develop his skills learned in his MSc International Marketing course.
Now that his 4-week placement is up, and we are sad to see Darren go we decided to ask him a few questions about his time with us…
Firstly, why did you choose to do marketing as your MSc?
Upon graduating with my honours in International Business Management, Covid was still a strong issue impacting the job market and I was looking to do a Masters in something more specialised. I had experience in roles such as finance for example but wished for something that allowed me to explore my more creative side.
What drew you to apply for your placement at Escone?
Escone came to visit Robert Gordon University to give a talk about the company for a module unrelated to the work placement, however, they did state that they would be looking to take part in this program. The talk from Kevin, Mike & Ewan not only drew me towards the company from what they do but given my previous financial background was something I felt like I could contribute significantly.
Tell us a little bit about the projects you were involved in?
Upon learning about the business and what Escone do I undertook several projects/tasks. These included:
- Social media analysis of the organisation and made recommendations from my perspective
- Reviewed potential markets for Escone to enter – both from a company and partner perspective
- Developed a prototype feedback form that can be used by clients
- Conducted market research for potential prospects
- Developed the concept of E-Training hub that the organisation could incorporate
- Reviewed start-up companies of relevant industries in conjunction with how they will impact future markets
- Created design concepts for company brochures
- Visited Edinburgh for strategy meeting – took meeting notes and worked alongside management to develop growth strategies for the business
Have you learnt any important lessons whilst at Escone?
Importance of growth in a business – due to never working in a smaller organisation before I learned by being in the office how vital each person’s role is.
What was your favourite part?
The opportunity to go to Edinburgh was not something I had anticipated going into the 4-week program. Given the nature of the meeting held in Edinburgh and its’ importance to the growth of Escone, it made me feel like I had a real contribution towards the organisation. As well as getting to meet everyone in the office, being made to feel so welcome and grabbing a few drinks with them after work one Friday.
Do you feel what you learnt at university was easily applied to a ‘real world’ job?
One aspect which I felt had particular benefit was the ability to conduct market research in an accurate manner. Applying my working methods of how I would approach a coursework for example gave me the tools to approach market research in relevant industries.
What’s next on the horizon for you?
I have two more coursework’s remaining for the end of April and will then partake in my master’s dissertation over the summer.
Escone is passionate about young people getting a chance to show what they can do and are thrilled to have played a part in Darren’s career progression. Everyone at Escone wishes Darren the best of luck with his MSc and beyond!
